It’s official! According to the latest data, Google lost its number one spot to TikTok on the list of most used internet sites in 2021.
TikTok, a video-focused social networking service owned by ByteDance, the highest-valued private setup globally, was released in September 2016 while it launched internationally in 2018.
In 2020, TikTok was the 7th most used internet site, right behind Amazon, Netflix, Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook, meaning it managed to dethrone the internet behemoth, Google, in a relatively brief time span.
Namely, TikTok started its rise gradually. For instance, on February 17, 2021, TikTok was above Google for one day. It stayed on top for a few more days in March and May. However, after August 10, 2021, TikTok held first place on most days, especially in October and November.
The main reason behind TikTok’s rise in popularity was the lockdown caused by the ongoing pandemic. For example, more than three billion people downloaded the app in July alone. Today, TikTok has over one billion active users globally.
TikTok also became the most popular social media domain in late 2021, followed by Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram.
And due to TikTok’s popularity in the US, Virtual Dining Concepts plans to launch a new food delivery service in March — the so-called TikTok Kitchen — where people will be able to order food that was initially created in TikTok videos.
The founders of Virtual Dining also plan to set up about 300 TikTok restaurants across the US. And by the end of 2022, there should be over 1,000.
